Chile – A land that Loves Chess

September 18th, 2008

I’ve been thrilled today by the popularity of chess in Chile amongst grade school-aged children. Well, I should say, in Santiago.

I used to consider chess a more well known game amongst those of another generation, but not so in Santiago. If one was to go frequent the many institutes across the city one would find many kids carrying their chess set around waiting for recess to take out the board and pieces and battle against their friends.

This is amongst those who could be playing their hand held video games, or the latest card battling game, or soccer! But no, these are of a new kind of generation; one that chooses the chess set rather than the ball. This could be a direction.
